Description
Alnus glutinosa
The Black Alder (Alnus glutinosa) is a medium-sized deciduous tree native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, often found in wetlands, riverbanks, and moist soils. It typically grows 15–20 feet tall with a pyramidal or rounded crown. The tree is recognized for its glossy, dark green, rounded leaves with slightly serrated edges and its ability to fix nitrogen in the soil through root nodules. In early spring, it produces small, yellowish catkins and woody, cone-like seed structures that persist through winter. Valued for erosion control and its ecological benefits, the Black Alder is a resilient species that supports wildlife and improves soil fertility.
