Description
Alnus rugosa
The Speckled Alder (Alnus incana subsp. rugosa) is a small, multi-stemmed deciduous tree or shrub native to North America, commonly found in wetlands, along streambanks, and in moist forested areas. It typically grows 12–20 feet tall and is named for its smooth, dark bark marked with white, lenticel-like speckles. The plant features simple, oval leaves with serrated edges and produces small, reddish catkins in early spring, followed by cone-like seed structures in the fall. Known for its nitrogen-fixing roots, the Speckled Alder enhances soil quality and provides habitat for wildlife, making it an important species in ecological restoration projects.
