Description
Carya laciniosa
The Shellbark Hickory is a large, native tree known for its thick, shaggy bark and large, sweet-tasting nuts. The nuts are encased in a thick, relatively smooth shell, which makes them easier to crack than other hickory varieties. Shellbark Hickory grows in rich, well-drained soils and is often found in bottomland areas. The wood is strong and durable, making it valuable for furniture, cabinetry, and tool handles. This tree is also admired for its striking appearance, especially its bark, which peels in long strips as the tree matures.
