Description
Celastrus orbiculata
Chinese Bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculata) is a fast-growing, deciduous vine native to East Asia, known for its vibrant orange-red berries and climbing habit. The vine features round, glossy leaves and produces small, inconspicuous flowers in late spring to early summer, followed by striking clusters of bright berries in fall. Although visually appealing, Chinese Bittersweet is considered invasive in many regions of North America, where it can quickly overtake and damage native plants by smothering them. It thrives in a variety of soil types and light conditions, and while it is used for ornamental purposes, its invasive nature makes it problematic in natural ecosystems.
