Description
Quercus nigra
The Water Oak (Quercus nigra) is a medium-sized deciduous tree native to the southeastern United States, typically found in lowland areas, swamps, and floodplains. Growing 50-70 feet tall with a broad, rounded crown, it features dark green, lobed leaves that have a distinctive shape, with shallow sinuses. In the fall, the leaves turn yellow to brown. The Water Oak produces small acorns that provide food for wildlife. Known for its fast growth and adaptability to wet soils, this tree is commonly used for landscaping in areas with moist conditions, though its wood is relatively soft and not as commercially valuable as other oaks.
