Description
Physocarpus opulifolius
Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius) is a hardy, deciduous shrub native to North America, valued for its year-round ornamental appeal and adaptability. It grows 5 to 10 feet tall with a rounded form and features distinctive peeling bark that reveals layers of varying colors, giving it its name. In late spring, it produces clusters of small, white to pinkish flowers that attract pollinators, followed by red or purplish seed capsules in the fall. The foliage ranges from green to burgundy, depending on the variety, adding seasonal interest. Ninebark is low-maintenance, drought-tolerant, and excellent for erosion control, making it a favorite for landscapes and naturalized gardens.
