Taxodium distichum
The Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) is a large, deciduous conifer native to the southeastern United States, commonly found in wetlands, swamps, and along riverbanks. Growing 50-70 feet tall, it features feathery, soft, needle-like leaves that turn golden-brown in the fall before dropping, giving the tree its “bald” appearance in winter. Known for its distinctive, flared base and “knees” (woody protrusions from the roots), the Bald Cypress thrives in moist, swampy conditions but can tolerate drier soils once established. Its durable wood is highly valued for use in construction, furniture, and boat building. The Bald Cypress is often planted for its unique beauty, resilience, and ability to provide habitat for wildlife in wetland environments.
